Welcome to the Thomas Index Report for the week of May 31st.
With Memorial Day marking the unofficial start of the summer season, it’s one of the most popular occasions for breaking out the grill to barbecue — it’s actually the second biggest holiday for grilling in the United States!
As we’ve seen with other outdoor activity and home improvement or DIY projects, Americans have been investing in their homes and outdoor spaces over the past year while being limited in their ability to travel and participate in other activities. And one way they’ve been increasingly enjoying their homes and yards has been through the purchase of barbecue grills.
Back in 2017, about 70% of Americans owned a grill, though that figure has likely increased over the last year. Overall, barbecue grill sales in the U.S. are expected to reach almost $2.8 billion in 2021.
With demand heating up, grill manufacturers are racing to keep up production and match market interest. On the Thomasnet.com platform, our data shows that sourcing for barbecue grills has gone up 81% year over year and is up 135% percent over last quarter averages.
And while some grill manufacturers have experienced supply chain challenges over the past few months, major names like Weber have emerged largely unscathed thanks to their U.S.-based manufacturing facilities. Chris Scherzinger, Weber’s CEO, recently told Forbes, "Because we have a large U.S. manufacturing footprint we’ve been insulated to some degree, but it still means when the demand spikes, we have to rally and produce at record-setting levels."
