Partial connectability between Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands has been restored after the areas were made inaccessible following major landslips cutting off access over Barrengarry Mountain.

A free shuttle bus service is now providing direct access between the Valley and the Southern Highlands while critical slope stability work is carried out at Barrengarry Mountain.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said Transport for NSW had introduced a shuttle bus service to ensure locals had safe and reliable access between Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands while the priority works continued.

"Last week, we introduced a free morning and afternoon shuttle bus service from Kangaroo Valley over Barrengarry Mountain, and it's already proving a game changer for locals," Mr Farraway said.

"About 15 residents used the service in the first three days alone to get to work, medical appointments and other events via a more direct route.

"The daily shuttle is an extension of the successful bus service for school children implemented last month, with 44 children and three teachers taking advantage of this service."

This is a free service and timetable and further information can be found in the bus timetable.

Transport for NSW crews and a specialist contractor began works on April 11 following major flooding and rainfall in late February.

Crews will conduct critical slope stability and restoration at three key areas identified as a safety concern.

"Initial work has included soil nailing to reinforce the slope, which involves drilling long metal 'nails' into the slope bed that is covered with high-strength wire mesh and concrete," Mr Farraway said.

"This is a complex process and will require continued extensive investigations and preparation.

"We are working as quickly as possible and appreciate the community's continued support as we work to restore safe access through this area."

Transport for NSW expects it will take up to six months to restore access at Barrengarry Mountain, weather permitting.

The community will continue to be updated as the project progresses.

Meanwhile, access to Kangaroo Valley from the south over Cambewarra Mountain continues to be on an escort basis.

Transport for NSW has begun investigation works to inform repair options along Moss Vale Road on Cambewarra Mountain.

These investigation works are expected to take up to two weeks, weather permitting.

Moss Vale Road remains closed between Barfield Road and Kangaroo Valley Rodd, with access by escort operating 24/7.
