Astral Radiance brings Pokémon Legends: Arceus to the Trading Card Game. Here are some of the most popular (and expensive) secret rares from the set.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game's newest expansion Astral Radiance just released, but how expensive are its new card styles, and how much are cards representing new characters from Pokémon Legends: Arceus actually worth? With the introduction of cards like Iridia, Adaman, and the various different Hisuian variants from the Sinnoh region, Astral Radiance has many collector’s items that separate it from other sets that follow the main-line Pokémon RPGs. The return of Legendary Pokémon like Dialga and Palkia mesh well with the new VSTAR mechanics that have been created since the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Many TCG players have combed through the entire Astral Radiance Pokémon list and marked the Hisuian Typhlosion and Gardenia’s Vigor as possible constructed playable cards, but the prices have already settled for a few of the cards that collectors are looking for. Dialga and Palkia are predictably some of the most expensive cards, but Machamp has also risen in price dramatically since Astral Radiance hit shelves. While prices are still volatile due to the low supply of cards, the early winners are definitely worth hunting for and collecting.

As is tradition, the Secret Rare and Holofoil full art versions of popular Pokémon are still the most expensive versions of cards in the set, with alternate arts like Pokémon Astral Radiance's Trainer Gallery cards in the set fetching prices far beyond the price of a pack. There are no triple-digit prices, but many of the holofoil cards come close to hitting $100. As the week goes on, many of these prices will settle down, but for people that pre-ordered boxes or want to find the best cards early, there’s a small list of cards over thirty dollars that everyone will be looking to grab.

What box-openers and collectors are looking for out of the Astral Radiance booster packs are the secret Alternate Arts for Origin Forme Dialga V and Origin Forme Palkia V which both evolve into Pokémon VSTAR cards. These two cards are worth the most out of all the cards available in packs, with Dialga V sitting at $80 and Palkia V sitting at $65, according to TCG Player. These special styles only come in Holofoil, but their foil designs mesh well with the given art.

Although Dialga V beats Palkia V in terms of price, the Secret Rare version of Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR is also the fourth most valuable card sitting at $50. Palkia VSTAR is the direct evolution from Palkia V, making it harder to play, but the VSTAR power is strong and the secret art jumps off the card. The two Palkia cards being the most expensive make it seem as though it might be preferred to Dialga, but either one will pay for plenty of Pokémon TCG investment cards and unopened boosters.

Classic Pokémon often have expensive card versions and alternate arts, and Machamp V is no exception. Machamp V is an unevolved Pokémon that’s going for around $70 and has great art for collectors. Machamp has been in the Pokémon Trading Card Game since the first base set and has gotten many different versions, but this is the first time a V form has been printed. Many of the original Pokémon from the late 90s still fetch high prices for their modern alternative arts due to nostalgic demand, and this new card adds another collectible for completionists.

Leading the Hisuian variants in terms of price is the Samurott VMAX Secret Art. All of the Hisuian variants have secret arts and can be worth more than $20, but Hisuian Samurott VSTAR is the most expensive due to its art and comparisons to previous powerful effects.

Although the VSTAR effect can only be used once, putting damage counters directly on an opponent’s Pokémon without attacking can be extremely powerful in the right circumstances. All of the Astral Radiance Hisuian Pokémon forms have some sort of alternate art, but in its gold frame, Hisuian Samurott VSTAR is worth the most at around $37.

Astral Radiance’s trainers, apart from Gardenia and Roxanne, are all set during the events of Legends: Arceus and the cards heavily focus on representing both characters and locations from the game. Iridia and Adaman are the leaders of the Diamond and Pearl clan on Hisui, making them important to the lore and world of Sinnoh. Other new Supporter cards like Cyllene and Kamado represent the residents of Jubilife Village, but Iridia is the most expensive.

While thse are Pokémon cards not tested in competitive play, Iridia and Adaman help their respective clans by allowing players to utilize the energy needed to power Dialga and Palkia’s attacks. Iridia in particular searches for two cards at no cost, whereas Adaman’s card requires discard. In addition, Iridia and Palkia may just be the more popular characters right now. Iridia's full-art version without the Secret Rare rainbow foiling is worth $35.

Compared to older sets, Astral Radiance might not have the $100 chase cards that make box openings popular, but there are still plenty of cards to pull and decks to build around. The mix of Pokémon cards, Trainer Cards and Stadium cards worth more than 20$ make buying the set early a better idea than waiting to pick up cards. As the set gets opened more and eventually goes out of print, the most valuable Pokémon TCG cards will become more obvious and more expensive, while many of the less desirable cards will decrease in price.

As always, none of these cards are required to play the TCG. These Holofoil cards and Secret Rares usually show up only once per box, but standard non-foil versions are still available. Astral Radiance still seems like a good set to open, especially considering that these are the first versions of many cards connected to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Once Scarlet and Violet release later this year, many of the new cards in the TCG will be themed after the trainers and areas from the new region. These cards directly related to Legends: Arceus have importance and value beyond their gameplay effects and will likely be remembered for introducing its characters to the world of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
